Most transfer cases need ATF. The transfer case is a sealed system. There is no filter, no cooler. So the fluid can get kind of nasty if it heats up. I generally replace my transfer case fluid every 30K miles, but I do a good amount of RV towing.

The smaller units and that goes up to the 18,000 lb chassis use the Dana 80 differential. Put your drain plug back in, pump new oil in, then put the fill plug back in. And you are done.
