My engagement ring is an aquamarine, which I believe is from the same family as emerald. My husband chose a different stone other than diamond because he felt like diamonds were a rip off. Aquamarine does rate lower (number 8?) on the mohs scale but I wore it every day for years and it never scratched.

Talk to him gently, say you appreciate the sentiments but you had really hoped for a different ring and can you go together to see what the options are. The ring is cheap. It was £300 and has actually gone down to £180. I mentioned this to my sister who said I was a dick, essentially. Apparently, she'll be showing it to her friends (some of whom are engaged), who will know about rings and clarity and such.
