As some observe this year’s Black History Month theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” it is a great time to take a second look at dust-covered black-and-white photos that speak volumes about Virginia’s African American-owned hospitals that opened in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s, but eventually closed. In the US, ownership of the healthcare system is mainly in private hands, though federal, state, county, and city governments also own certain facilities. As of 2018, there were 5,534 registered hospitals in the US. There were 4,840 community hospitals, which are defined as nonfederal, short-term general, or specialty hospitals.
