Topic starter. I have a 2005 honda accord over 185,000 miles, automatic transmission. I noticed it makes a loud whining noise when I start it up when it's cold. The noise doesn't change when I turn the wheel but quiets down as the gears change and engine warms up. Rest assured, nothing is 'clanking' or 'grinding' in your engine. It is loud when the hood is open but no damage is occurring to the engine or the vehicle.

When I get out of the car to see where it is coming from, it seems to be coming from the left passenger side under the hood, in the area where the belt is.The Honda tech may spend time with it to bleed air out of the system- hopefully that will take care of the problem for you. They may even clean it up a little for you- if not, engine degreaser is your friend. If not, report back. The power steering pump can be fixed for about $20 in parts.
