Assuming the setup consisting of input hopper - machine - output hopper and don't forget about 2 empty space for you to input and take the output, that's already 5 tiles. One of the best use cases I have for Hopper so far is recycling. Since they go pretty quickly, it's far easier to just dump all your recycling trash in 2-3 hoppers attached to recycling bins and collect as needed.The hopper is pretty much literally as late game and expensive as it gets for an item, but still requiring manual removal is hardly automation. If you've got lots of hoppers it's actually worse, since you then have to play inventory management on all of them, instead of just running by a bunch of machines holding down the mouse button.
